This weekend, take some time for self-care
Everyone needs a little me time every now and then.
Self-care isn’t an indulgence - it’s a key part of making sure we are healthy both physically and mentally. And, when we care for ourselves properly, we can better care for others.
So, this long weekend, take the time to schedule in some self-care. It doesn’t have to be expensive, complicated, or time-consuming. Here are some ideas.
1. Take a Walk in Nature

One of the easiest and most effective things you can do for yourself is to go for a walk, especially in a natural setting like a park, beach, or forest. A 20-minute walk can reduce stress, improve your mood, and even enhance cognitive function. Research has shown that spending time in green spaces can lower cortisol levels and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. The Department of Conservation has a list of tracks for all fitness levels.
Leave your phone in your pocket and focus on your surroundings - notice the trees, the sounds, and your breathing.
2. Try Adult Colouring or Drawing

You don’t have to be an artist to enjoy the calming effects of colouring. Adult colouring books are designed to help you relax and focus. Studies have found that colouring can significantly reduce anxiety and improve mindfulness [source].
Try mandala-style colouring pages which are designed to encourage focus and calm. You can usually find printable ones online for free.
3. Take a Digital Detox

Even a few hours without screens can do wonders for your mental health. Constant notifications, emails, and social media scrolling can contribute to stress and burnout. Taking time away from your phone or computer allows your brain to reset.
Set your phone to “Do Not Disturb” for a couple of hours. Use that time to read a book, cook a meal, or just sit in quiet.
4. Listen to Music You Love

Music has a direct impact on your emotions. Listening to your favourite songs can trigger the release of dopamine, the brain’s “feel-good” chemical. Upbeat music can boost energy, while slower tunes can help you unwind.
Create a feel-good playlist and listen to it while doing chores, relaxing, or walking.
5. Do a Simple Home Spa Session

You don’t need a fancy spa appointment to feel pampered. A warm bath, a face mask, and some essential oils can be incredibly restorative.
Light a candle or play calming music to enhance the mood.
6. Declutter One Small Space

Even just tidying up one drawer or shelf can give you a quick sense of accomplishment and control and help you feel more focused. If you work from home, your desk might be a good place to start ready for the week ahead.
Set a timer for 15 minutes and see how much you can tidy.
